Pastor John's newsletter message.

Why is it important to be in worship? Here are some thoughts to ponder.

---Saint John of the cross once wrote, "The virtuous soul that is alone,...is like the burning coal that is alone. It will grow colder rather than hotter." We notice that Jesus gathered twelve disciples around him. Surely he realized that we need companions on the journey of faith.

---Philip Yancy wrote, "Whenever I abandon church for a time, I find that I am the one who suffers. My faith fades, and the crusty shell of lovelessness grows over me again. I grow colder rather than hotter."

---If we believe in God and Jesus then we must ask the question of what kind of witness are we making to others if we don't go to church when we are able to. And those of us who come to church need the witness of others who presence at worship says that this is important. It's hard enough at times to get up in the morning to go to worship. But when we find others there who have made the effort, we are strengthened and God is praised. There we can share our burdens and hopes in God's presence.

---Of course, we should not forget that God in the 10 commandments said, 'Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.' And part of that 'holy keeping' is to worship God in thanks for the life he has given us. God is not saying that only if it suits me or is interesting or entertaining should we keep the sabbath and attend worship. "I am the Lord your God." That's basic reason to gather to worship God.

---Certainly there are some who are home bound. Then it is the church's responsibility to bring the fellowship to them. Visits by the pastor and members extend the Sunday community to those who can't come.

I hope some of these thoughts get you to thinking, especially if you have chosen to stay away from worship and church. Your absence is felt within the church and your presence adds to the strength of Christ's church. We are in the wonderful Easter season and a great time to reflect upon one's faith and how we live out that faith.

Please take this as an invitation to church, to worship. And if you are thinking of someone you haven't seen at church for awhile, please tell them they are missed and invite them to come.
They will be pleased to know you thought of them.

Peace in Christ,
Pastor John
